About Us
Mont Nicolle School is a caring and friendly school which prides itself on enabling children to flourish and achieve high standards across all areas of learning. Our collective Core Values underpin everything that we do as a community, staff, children and parents.
We are a primary school with a nursery class for children from 3 to 11 years. We serve a large catchment area to the south and west of St. Brelade, roughly bordered by the main road through Red Houses to the north, and St. Aubin’s Village/La Haule Hill to the southeast.
At present we have about 240 children on roll in 8 classes from Nursery to Year 6. We are a single form entry school.
We aim to ensure that Mont Nicolle School is a safe, secure and stimulating setting in order to promote learning. We are a Rights Aware School which means we respect the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and teach the children about it. As part of this work, the children learn about the rights of children across the world.
The school is set in beautiful surroundings, with lots of space for the children to play and many opportunities for learning outdoors. There are hard and grass play areas, a small adventure playground and a woodland “plantation” area, as well as a playing field at the lower eastern end of the site. We believe learning outdoors offers many fantastic opportunities and try to make the best use of our entire grounds, local area and Jersey as a whole. There are many opportunities for trips out of school.
The building was designed to suit the sloping site and has many levels inside. The Foundation and Key Stage 1 area occupies the lower part of the building and has classrooms grouped near a central activity area. In the centre of the school is the large hall used for indoor P.E., assemblies and many other activities. Up some stairs we have a library, music and cookery room, as well as the year 3 and 4 classrooms. Year 5 and 6 occupy a large open-plan ‘penthouse’ above Key Stage 1.
We are continually working hard to develop our school environment. We have a ‘Trim Trail’, a pond, and a kitchen garden. We continue to develop the potential of our woodland plantation for Forest School learning.
Mont Nicolle School is part of a cluster of schools which include La Moye, St. Mary, Les Landes, St. Peter and Bel Royal Primary schools, and Les Quennevais Secondary school. We meet together regularly to share professional expertise and discuss matters of mutual concern and benefit.
