English and Read, Write Inc.
Language is the prime medium through which pupils learn and express themselves and we all have a responsibility in developing effective literacy. The staff of Mont Nicolle School are committed to developing literacy skills in all pupils to support their learning and raise standards.
We deliver this in the following ways:
Read, Write Inc. (RWI)
RWI is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
The programme begins with Phonics for 4-6 year olds who are learning to read and write, grouping children according to ability so they learn rapidly at the right level. Initial and on-going assessment enables us to track every child’s progress. An important feature of the programme is Partner Work which means every child participates in the whole lesson.
Once children have completed the phonics programme (usually in Year 2) they move on to Read Write Inc. Literacy and Language. It equips fluent readers with the skills to explore new vocabulary, learn skills to comprehend a range of texts and use grammar effectively in their own writing.
RWInc. Spelling is being used in our current Literacy and Language groups. It is a 10 minutes a day programme for children which includes short, rigorous activities in workbooks which allows for structured, cumulative knowledge and progression.
